KIDS CAFE
This is our childhood hunger initiative. SHFBM partners with agencies that already serve children at risk of hunger to help provide nutritious meals and snacks at their sites. We currently operate 35 of these sites in 10 different counties and serve thousands of children who might otherwise go hungry. Our goal is to have sites in all 19 counties within 5 years.

KIDS CAFE BACKPACK PROGRAM
The Backpack Program is a component of the Kids Cafe program. In the Backpack Program, a backpack full of nutritious, ready to eat or easy to prepare foods is sent home on weekends and holidays when school and Kids Cafe meals are not available.

MOBILE PANTRY
This program is designed to deliver food to rural areas of our service region where poverty rates tend to be higher. Specially equipped trucks deliver 5,000 – 10,000 pounds of food per trip. Mobile pantry deliveries occur 10 months of the year with almost 200 pantries held annually. In fiscal year 2008, we delivered over one and a half million pounds of food and served over 50,000 individuals through this program.

SECOND HELPING
This program provides supplemental boxes of nutritious foods to homebound elderly in Cabarrus, Lancaster, Lincoln, Union (NC) and York counties on a monthly basis. SHFBM plans to expand this program into additional counties in 2008-2009.

FIVE-A-DAY
This program provides calcium rich foods and nutritional information to children and seniors at risk of hunger in Cabarrus, Iredell, Mecklenburg, Stanly, Rowan, and Union counties.

APPLIANCE PROGRAM
To increase the ability of our partner agencies to provide more nutritional foods, refrigerators and freezers are needed. To support this cause, Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina has provided $40,000 in appliance grants to dozens of partner agencies in the past two years.

BRANCH NETWORK
Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina distributes food from four locations. The main warehouse in Charlotte has 23,000 square feet of dry storage; 1220 square feet of refrigerator storage and 2350 square feet of freezer storage.

Junior Chefs is a youth leadership development program that brings together Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina staff, partner agencies, nutrition experts, culinary professionals and other community resources to offer young would-be cooks hands-on experience.

THE EMERGENCY FOOD ASSISTANCE PROGRAM (TEFAP)
Through The Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP), the Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina is the distributor of USDA products to those in need in nine counties in North Carolina – Anson, Burke, Catawba, Cabarrus, Gaston, Lincoln, Mecklenburg, Rutherford and Stanly and five counties in South Carolina – Cherokee, Lancaster, Spartanburg, Union and York.
