Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina (SHFBM) strives through education, advocacy, and partnerships to eliminate hunger by the solicitation and distribution of food. SHFBM has been in existence since 1981.

Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina – one of only six Food Banks in the Metrolina area  serving 19 counties in North and South Carolina.  In FY2009-2010, Second Harvest Food Bank distributed over 33 million pounds of food and essential grocery items to over 600 agencies.  Agencies include emergency pantries, soup kitchens, senior programs, shelters and low-income daycares.

  • Pantries, homeless shelters, and soup kitchens serving 421,486 annually.

  • 66% of households served have incomes below the federal poverty level.

  • 47% report having to choose between paying for food or paying for
    utilities or heating fuel.

  • 51% report having to choose between paying for food or paying for rent or mortgage.

  • 39% report choosing between paying for food or paying for medicine or
    medical care.

  • 34% of households report having at least one household member in poor health.

  • 25% of the members of households served are children - over 100,000
    children assisted annually.

  • 9% of the people served are elderly.

  • 12% of the people served are homeless.
