North Carolina is a "State of Hunger". There are currently six Food Banks in North Carolina that are Feeding America members. These food banks help to serve all 100 counties in North Carolina. In North Carolina:
- Pantries, homeless shelters, and soup kitchens serving
1,098,200 annually.
- 70% of households served have incomes below the federal
poverty level.
- 49% report having to choose between paying for food or
paying for utilities or heating fuel.
- 41% report having to choose between paying for food or
paying for rent or mortgage.
- 38% report choosing between paying for food or paying
for medicine or medical care.
- 36% of households report having at least one household
member in poor health.
- 29% of the members of households served are children -
over 300,000 children assisted annually.
- 12% of the people served are elderly.
- 10% of the people served are homeless.
