Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina – one of only six Food Banks in the Metrolina area serving 16 counties in North and South Carolina. In FY2005-2006, Second Harvest Food Bank distributed over 17 million pounds of food and essential grocery items to almost 550 agencies as well as to food banks in 13 counties. Agencies include emergency pantries, soup kitchens, senior programs, shelters and low-income daycares.

- 66% of households served have incomes below the federal poverty level.
- 47% report having to choose between paying for food or paying for
utilities or heating fuel.
- 51% report having to choose between paying for food or paying for rent or mortgage.
- 39% report choosing between paying for food or paying for medicine or
medical care.
- 34% of households report having at least one household member in poor health.
- 25% of the members of households served are children - over 100,000
children assisted annually.
- 9% of the people served are elderly.
- 12% of the people served are homeless.
