Come solo, with your church group, your co-workers, your school or your family. Help out when it's convenient for you, daytime, nights, or weekends. One hour of your time provides the Food Bank with $20.25 of labor savings.
Training and materials are provided for all volunteer tasks.
Children: SHFBM accepts children to volunteer with one adult per child for ages 10-12. For ages 13-16, there must be one adult per six children. Ages 17 and up may be on their own, but no one under 18 is permitted to operate any equipment , including pallet jacks.
Charlotte CROP Hunger Walk – October 31, 2010 The walk starts at 2:30pm - just in front of Presbyterian Hospital. SHFBM is responsible for greeting walkers and for passing out beverages and snacks as the walkers come in. We need about 12 people from 3pm - 6pm. Harvest Feast - November 12-13 and November 19-20 This is our largest food/funds drive of the year. We are at Stonecrest Shopping Center on Rea Road in front of Harris Teeter from 10am - 7pm each day. Volunteers primarily help in two areas. They work the 4-way stop at Chic-Fil-A, the sidewalk alongside where we set up, the entrance to Harris Teeter, and the other entrances to the shopping center with signs and buckets and collect money. Volunteers also assist on the two Saturdays we are there with kid activities ranging from a Moon Walk to a beanbag toss from 11am - 3pm. Volunteers are scheduled 9am - 1pm, 12pm- 4pm and 3pm - 7pm each day. Belk Carolinas Carrousel Parade – November 25, 2010 SHFBM walks in the parade each year to say thanks to the community for their support and to extend our best wishes for the holidays. The parade steps off at 10am. We gather at 9am to don our festive red t-shirts---every walker gets a free t-shirt, Santa hat and get in position. Come join us! Empty Bowls – March 4, 2011 This luncheon event raises money to fight childhood hunger. Attendees receive a simple lunch of soup, salad and sandwiches AND their choice of a handmade bowl from one of our area’s potters. Volunteers help us set the tables, set up the auction items, put out bowls, wrap bowls and greet & thank attendees. Chef’s Best – March 25, 2011 Guests enjoy a delicious five-course meal. Each dish is prepared on-stage by a local chef then the audience is served after the demonstration. A nationally known chef demonstrates preparation of their signature dish as one course each year. There is also a live auction after the dinner. Volunteers help direct and greet guests as they arrive, sell raffle tickets during the reception and help guests find their tables. Taste of the Nation – TBA Held in mid-April each year at the Wachovia Atrium, TON is a great social occasion where guests get to sample food, beer and wine from 20 to 25 local Charlotte restaurants. Volunteers greet and direct guests, serve water and beer and assist with the silent auction. Jr. Chefs – TBA Jr. Chefs is a cook-off between five teams of junior chefs from our Kids Café sites. Volunteers help clean the kitchen afterwards! Letter Carriers Food Drive– May 14, 2011 SHFBM volunteers work at 9 postal stations around the city sorting the food brought in in by mail carriers. In some cases, volunteers also drive the mail routes picking up the Food that has been placed by the mailboxes to help the mail carriers.
