Family Dollar Donates 52,000 Pounds of Thanksgiving Fixings to Second Harvest

(Charlotte, NC – November 16, 2009) – Through the generosity of Family Dollar, Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina will receive 52,000 pounds of food to help feed thousands of hungry families for Thanksgiving. In honor of their 50th anniversary, Family Dollar is providing 52,000 pounds of fixings to help make Thanksgiving brighter for children, seniors and working poor families in our region.
Family Dollar will deliver the Thanksgiving fixings on Wednesday, November 18, 2009 at 1:30 p.m. at Second Harvest Food Bank located at 500-B Spratt Street. Family Dollar employees will be on hand to pack food bags which will be paired with turkeys. The packing of bags will begin at 2:00 p.m. Items being donated include cranberry sauce, green beans, pineapple, broth, soup, boxed potatoes and mandarin oranges.
In the 19-county region of North and South Carolina served by Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina, over 370,000 people live in poverty including 170,000 children and seniors. Requests for assistance at the emergency pantries served by Second Harvest are up 30-40% over the same time period last year. This donation will allow Second Harvest to make the Thanksgiving holidays brighter for people in need in our community.
