Seniors at risk of hunger are also more at risk for serious health problems. Prescription drugs may not be as effective. Malnourished seniors may experience depression and are also at higher risk of stroke. Likewise, in children, hunger may lead to reductions in growth and affect brain development. Calcium is the most plentiful mineral found in the human body and is important for strong bones and nerve cells. Five A Day Calcium is a program Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina has in place in Cabarrus, Iredell, Mecklenburg, Stanly, Rowan and Union counties that provides easy to prepare, calcium rich foods and nutritional information to children and seniors at risk of hunger.
